“Planet Claire” by The B-52’s (1979)

Sometimes you just need to get out of your head, shed some seriousness, and have a good time.  And good times call for good, bouncy music, like pretty much anything from The B-52’s.  I particularly like their self-titled first album, from which this track comes.

In 1979, disco was dying down, and rock music was growing barnacles.  The B-52’s stepped out of Athens, GA to rock college dorms and cast parties the world over.  And it was great.  Just nothing but fun fun fun:  Fun attitude, fun dance moves, fun lyrics, fun hair.

I always loved “Planet Claire.”  Maybe it’s the easy-to-learn-on-guitar “Peter Gunn” riff chugging throughout, or maybe it’s just because it was the opening track on their debut album.  When this song comes on I have to fight the urge to smile and assume air guitar postures.  I usually lose that fight.
