“Precious” by The Pretenders (1980)

11 09 2008

Believe it or not, there was a time when people thought women couldn’t rock.  I know, hard to believe, but it’s true.  There were a few exceptions to that rule, like Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith . . . . Okay, I’m running out of breath and feeling foolish for seeming to disprove my assertion.   I think few would disagree that, for the most part, rock and roll was a boys club.

Enter The Pretenders.  Listen to this song and try to convince me that women aren’t every bit as tough and tenacious as any man.  And in addition to being Exhibit J23 in the silly war of the sexes, this is a fantastic track from one of my favorite records of all time.  Chrissie Hynde and the rest of the band are on fire.

You will deal with a lot of knuckleheads in your lifetime (including your Daddy at times), and when you need to remind yourself that you are, indeed, a force to be reckoned with, blast this song.  It works for me!

WARNING:  This song contains explicit language which is entirely appropriate, if not necessary, to this form of art.  Anyone who can’t handle it should skip to the next post.  But, really, why?

Still my favorite song!
Anyone who can’t admire Chrissie Hynde’s vocal ability is a fool as well as anyone who can’t recognize the band’s relevance and extreme talent is a tool
