“Beautiful” performed by Christina Aguilera (2002)

1 11 2008

Sometimes there is a very nice synergy in pop music:  a great song, performed by a great singer, backed by some great session musicians.  This track is a perfect example of that.  There is no denying that Christina Aguilera has an extraordinary voice, and the original recording contains a powerful and moving performance.

But I particularly love the actual song.  Written by Linda Perry, who also produced the track, it is stunningly personal, but also incredibly empowering.  Ms Perry used to front the band 4 Non Blondes, and she’s been responsible for some terrific music.

People can be very superficial, even mean, especially in our consumer-driven society.  And especially when you’re young.  When you get older, you won’t care so much, but it is hard when you’re growing up and figuring out who you are.  So if someone has hurt your feelings with petty insults, or made you feel bad about yourself in any way, well, you know what?  Screw ’em!

“You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can’t bring you down”

Perhaps by the time you read this, record labels will have caught up with the rest of the world.  I wanted you to hear the album version, but the corporate suits will not allow people to share that version.  But this live version is pretty dang good (this is an awesome group of musicians, and check out the amazing drummer!  I’ve gotta find out his name).
