“Rusty Cage” by Soundgarden (1992)

3 11 2008

Soundgarden kind of burst forth with the so-called “grunge” movement, although I never really thought they fit that mold.  To me, they were like Black Sabbath on a lot of caffeine, and I really dig it.  Kim Thayil and Chris Cornell’s guitars are tight, crisp, and glorious.  The drums and bass are spot on.  And Cornell’s singing still gives me chills.  He’s like the bastard child of Freddie Mercury and Janis Joplin.  A truly great singer.

And what I like about this song is its relentless grip, its driving force, its scream to break free.  Right now, in fact, I’m having a bit of difficulty at the office.  The soul-sucking leeches appear to be winning.

So this is one of the songs that I cue up in my car stereo, as I pull away from work.  It helps.  My “superiors” owe these guys a lot.  Seriously.

“I’m gonna break
I’m gonna break my
I’m gonna break my rusty cage
And run!”

(Check out how they break it down toward the end, about 2:50.  Simply superb.)
