“Girlfriend” by Matthew Sweet (1991)

I remember first hearing this album and being blown away.  Great songs with a fresh, sharp edge.  An edge which has never dulled, in my opinion.

I love the loose, manic drums in lock step with the thick, melodic bass.  And the Jimi Hendrix-esque lead guitar, adding its pleading voice to the already stellar vocal arrangement.

If you want some great tunes played really well, Matthew Sweet has the goods.

If you like “Girlfriend,” you should check out the song that he contributed to The Bigtop soundtrack, “Wild,” which has all of the great qualities you mentioned above…

Thanks, Devon, for the great tip. A lot of good artists on that soundtrack. And now I’m curious about the film, too 🙂
