“Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)” by Cracker (1992)

28 01 2009

David Lowery, the leader of Cracker, has always seemed to me like the “Mr. Crankypants” of rock and roll.  And since I’m something of a curmudgeon myself, I love his stuff, going back to his first band, Camper Van Beethoven.  I think his music is fantastic, even if you’re a happy, well-adjusted person, which, of course, I hope you are.

I heard rumors that Mr. Lowery would get pretty irritated on stage, sometimes fighting with other band members.  I don’t know if that’s true, but let’s just say that Mr. Lowery is probably NOT the guy you want to ask, “Hey, do these pants make me look fat?”

Take a line from this song:

“What the world needs now is another folk singer like I need a hole in my head”

Of course, I completely disagree with this notion.  Except for the part of me that smirks every time I hear it.

As a bonus, here’s a great track from his days in Camper Van Beethoven, “Take the Skinheads Bowling.”  Terrific stuff.
