Everyone should just be required to have a Billie Holiday CD in their music collection. Anyone who goes into a record store to buy some of the latest manufactured sonic pap should be forced to sit down and listen to Billie. Now, compare her to what they’re trying to sell you today.

Ms Holiday had a hard life, and you can hear it in her voice. The ache, the yearning, the resignation, it’s all there, each performance a social study in itself.
I hope you can hear it, too. What an amazing talent.
