There is a special place in my heart for Kate Bush. There has been for over 20 years, when I bought my first Kate Bush album. Her music can be pretty experimental, but it is always emotionally powerful and thought-provoking. This will not be the last of her work to get posted for you.
This is the title track from her 1989 album, and it was a lifeline for me when I was stuck on an Air Force base in Louisiana, constantly bombarded with bland country music and bad heavy metal. I couldn’t listen to it on a stereo, though. I had to listen with headphones, or else my roommate might think I was funny, but not funny “haha.” I never did figure out how to respond to the neanderthals who would claim, “If it ain’t country, it ain’t sh*t.”
So this record, and this song, provided some sonic escape inward for me, and this was really helpful when Desert Storm came along. 16-hour days, seven days a week, but at least I had Kate waiting for me back in my barracks.
It’s a celebration of life, of passion, of savoring pleasurable moments of all kinds. The words were inspired by the novel “Ulysses” written by James Joyce. Specifically, by the character Molly, as she steps out of the pages of the book and is mesmerized by her newfound senses.
